Health care is being rapidly digitized. The plain films that came with xrays are becoming more and more obsolete due to the increasing trend of using digital xray equipment and technology. Instead of porting around tons of films to be examined by different teams and lengthy development times for xrays, digital xray machines have made obtaining xrays much easier at the patient bedside and have also led to better access to xrays by medical professionals. In addition, with a generation of baby-boomer medical professionals retiring and a new tech-savvy generation of medical professionals replacing them, having a digital xray machine will more and more be considered standard in the health care field.

Digital xray imaging and equipment offer a plethora of advantages over traditional xray imaging. Though the initial cost and training is more expensive and time-consuming, the benefits quickly pay for themselves; digitized xrays can be shared without any hiccups among several health care teams, leading to less time wasted fetching xray films. Duplicate films also do not have to be printed out. Instead, health care teams can simply access a patient’s xray through electronic medical records or an online patient record system. Digital imaging also allows health care professionals to view imaging outside of the hospital, helping create a continuum of patient care anywhere.

With electronic health records soon a standard reality, not having digital xray equipment can soon become a huge detriment to a hospital or a practice. Thus, it is better to go ahead and invest time and money now to reap the benefits and savings later. There are many types of software and equipment that can be used for digital xray and imaging, and all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Standard or special monitors can be used for digital xrays, and digital xrays can be supported on various operating systems and PACS. The future of health care records is already here, and moving to digital xray equipment is the way to go for the future.
